How I did it: I drove down to a little road called Butler Wash near Bluff, UT, and found a camping spot where no one could be seen (there were lots of people camping elsewhere along the road). It was pretty scary being there all alone and I think I would have been able to enjoy the scenery with another person to keep me company.
I got the tent set up but then the wind started. Soon enough the storm clouds started rolling in so I packed up camp in a hurry and drove to a motel in Blanding, UT. I don't think my car would've gotten out of the camp spot if the road was wet, it was sketchy even without it wet.
I ended up driving through Montezuma Creek near Blanding the next day, about the most off-roading I'll ever do in my little Kia Optima. I found some Anisazi indian ruins that weren't marked by signs and hiked up to them before driving the 5 hours back to my home.
Lessons & tips: It's definitely an experience. One lesson I learned was that I didn't like being all alone as much as I thought. Being with someone else, at least for me, lets me be more adventurous and enjoy myself more by decreasing the fear factor.
