"I waited until my AT&T contract was up for renewal."
How I did it: Though I attended Macworld when the first iPhone was announced, I promised myself that I would not purchase the first generation iPhone, and I would not pay for an early renewal of my AT&T contract (something like $200!) in order to get the Apple phone.
I did purchase the 1st generation iPod touch, though, but I really wasn't using it because it didn't have 3G and I didn't feel like carrying it around with my old cell phone.
So when the price came down for the iPhone and my contract renewed, I decided to get it. It's partly a toy, but it's also for business use. And the one app that I'm using very seriously is called Spend. It's on the homepage of my iPhone, and it helps me to budget discretionary items. I'm determined to cut in half my spending on certain things. This budgeting will help me pay my new iPhone bill every month, and it will help me get through some financially hard times.
So yeah, it's worth the purchase. Of course, the 3rd gen. iPhone is coming out this summer. Go figure.
Lessons & tips: Get the iPhone called Spend, and use it to budget your spending.
