"I overreacted at first but now I'm happy"
How I did it: I stopped getting my hair relaxed 9 months ago. I didn't want to chop my hair off when it was too short. So I grew it out and wore my hair in a style called the curly fro. Search for it on YouTube and you can find videos about how to do a curly fro.
Then on February 19 I got fed up. The relaxed hair in the back seemed to be breaking off. I had cut off many inches of hair over the months, but I had about 4 inches of relaxed hair and 5 inches of new growth. So I chopped off my hair myself. I just wet my hair so the natural hair would be shrunken down and the relaxed hair would be easy to see. I just cut off the hair at the demarcation line. In the following weeks I cut off any ends I had missed. That was it!
At first I thought my hair was too short. I had 5 inches of new growth but it shrunk down to only about 1 inch. So I did twists and did a twist out the next day. You can read about my whole experience on my blog HERE.
Lessons & tips: Take your time during the transition process and don't chop off your hair until you are ready! Do a lot of research and start using natural hair products as soon as possible. Buy what you need so that you are ready to go when you chop. Learn different ways to style your hair. I think doing a curly fro for months made cutting my hair less of a shock to myself and other people because my hair had been shorter and curly for months. Its also good to collect photos of hairstyles you like and hair idols.
Resources: I researched a lot on Youtube, www.nappturality.com, all of my blogs that I saved on http://www.pageflakes.com/bronzetrinity/10225018. Subscribe to hair blogs because there are very few magazines you can get about natural hair and the internet sites are free and interactive. YouTube is great because there are many tutorial videos. You can ask the video posters questions too. I also signed up for an account on Fotki.com (my name is Bronzey) so that I could post my hair photos and see other people's photos. I think it really helped to be in contact with other transitioning and natural women so that you can get advice and support. Without that I would have never been able to do this.
