How to improve my sleeping habits
"The longest road I've been on. "
How I did it: It takes discipline to truly handle this "thing".
Lack of sleep is terrible. And it's very hard to overcome.
First I had to try a bunch of tricks:
- Work out more to exhaust myself. Kinda worked.
- No caffeine drinks after 1 PM. Very hard.
- Go to bed at the same time every night. Get up at the same time every morning. Nearly impossible.
- Reduce stress. This is a real suggestion given by doctors, chiropractors and sleep specialist. The catch 22 is lost of them. I wouldn't be stressed if I could sleep.
- I journaled.
- I cut out noise.
- I cut out light.
Lessons & tips: I really didn't know why I couldn't sleep. Once I tried the numerous steps to better sleeping habits, I figured out what was keeping me awake.
I personally didn't go to bed at a consistent time. I would be completely overstimulated late at night then expect to turn off the lights and go to bed. You get the picture. By eliminating things, trying out some steps for two weeks at a time, I figured out what worked.
The best thing to do is reduce your stress. It's like being kissed by angels when you finally do this and get a full night of sleep.
I go to bed at a regular time every night. I've been doing this for one month and get sleepy about a half an hour before my "bedtime". I don't answer the phone, I turn off the TV and log off the computer. Tuning out helps.
Resources: Too many books, pamphlets and articles to help. Ask your doctor then research the hundreds of books out there. Some were too fluffy for me, but you might be the fluffy type. Some were really therapy driven, and you might hate that. Pick an expert who analyzes the problems and has solutions based on your likes.
