How I did it: I got 5 baby chicks for my birthday last year.  It was a little rough at first -- because I live in a wintery city and have a HUGE cat, I had to keep them in my room for 2 months.  I didn't get much sleep, but then I usually don't anyway...
After about 6 months they started laying eggs -- white, brown and blue.  I love them -- the chickens are really funny too! 
I live right downtown, so it is nice to have a connection with the natural world.
I can have a really sh*tt! day and gathering the eggs is my little moment of Zen.  I never thought I would enjoy it so much.
