How to start a book club
How I did it: I just picked the book and invited several friends to join me in reading it and discussing. Both were enthusiastic. I figure it is a good way to get to know them better and use one another as a support system. I selected a rather heavy book that requires honest and deliberate contemplation. We all get too busy and can go weeks without serious reflection on life and where we are going.
Lessons & tips: Keep it simple. Make sure people know that they don't have to like or even finish a book if they don't want to. The discussion about why you didn't like it or choose to finish is still good. No need to be a snob. Take turns choosing the book and be willing to work around busy schedules. It should be a pleasure and not a burden for your participants.
Resources: Local Libraries have book club sets of popular titles. Also my bookstore offers a book club discount for multiple copy purchases.
