How to save enough money to cover 3 months' worth of living expenses
How I did it: For me, it was necessary to focus quite a bit to accomplish this goal. I knew it would take time, so really, I just embraced that and tried to make it work for me. I put a little aside month after month (I used automatic payroll deductions for most of this - a certain amount out of each paycheck), cutting back on extras, and putting unexpected income (product rebates, tax rebate, found money) into the pot. The payroll deduction is great because it adds up on its own when you're not watching and in a lot of cases, it's amazing how we are able to adjust with even a couple of dollars a week less. Truly, every little bit adds up!
Lessons & tips: If it's a goal that's important to you, you've just got to buckle down and find a way to do it. For me it was important because of the unknown in life - never knowing what's coming next - a layoff, a job change, a move - and I want to be as prepared as I can be. I don't like the thought of falling behind and even IF I could ask someone else for help, I don't ever want to be in the position to need to.
No matter how long it takes, if this is something you want to do, do it! :)
