Oh, and in the end it cost me £20 not the full £50. Had some drama with the finance people forgetting to tell the records office that I’d paid, but a couple of phone calls and it was sorted!
How to get hold of my medical notes
How I did it: I sent an email to my local PALS (Patient Advice & Liaison Service) I went to http://www.pals.nhs.uk/
and searched for my local trust. I got the email address from there,
and they were brilliant. Within half an hour I had a response and the
address of the Records Office that I need to write to. Apparently the
fee can be anything up to £50.00 depending on what I require. I was happy to pay £50 to get copies! I think they will make quite a lovely coffee table book. But you can probably view them for free if you contact your own trust
Lessons & tips: You can only get copies of what the trust you contact holds. So if you visit a hospital in Trust A, but write to Trust B, then unless Trust A have sent copies of your notes to Trust B they won't be included, you have to contact that trust seperately.
Resources: There’s a bit on the Department of Health website about accessing your medical records, and I think this page from Mind is relevant too.
