How to live by the sea by mermaid

"I now live 6 miles from the beach, and long for mountains!"

How I did it: Sold everything, moved to the South (DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT!), and started a business. Said goodbye to all my friends and family in the process, of course.

Lessons & tips: Family and friends are more important than the geographic area you're in, and they are irreplaceable - make sure you're willing to give that up, and feel rootless for a few years while you settle in to your new area. And, every time someone you love is sick, or dies, or has a birthday for that matter, you'll want to be home. Forget about finding a babysitter or someone to help you move the couch in your new area - until you make new friends, or pay someone, you're on your own!

Also, where are you supposed to go on vacation if you live by the sea?! Oh, yeah - back home to visit everyone you left behind!

You can always make friends

There is an old cliche about new friends being “silver” and old friends being “gold”. Both are valuable. It is totally true that it takes time to “settle” and feel comfortable in a brand new, to you, community. I move a lot, probably a consequence of my family moving a lot when I was younger. I find that it takes between 2 and 3 years to really feel as if my roots have taken hold and to have a few close friends in the new setting. I also do not move too far away from previous community so that I am not precluded from returning from time to time for visits.
