How to be part of a flash mob
How I did it: A guy from uni was trying to start a flash mob for a video presentation about his stay in NZ. Needless to say, as soon as I heard about it, I was in.
He'd posted fliers around various parts of the uni, but they failed to attract much attention, so most of our "recruiting" for the mob was done on the day.
We went up to people on the street, explained the concept to them, and asked if they'd like to be a part of the experience. It was all a matter of asking the right people, we found. Young people and tourists seemed to be the most relaxed and open to the idea.
With this is mind we started recruiting at the backpackers around town. One of the places even let us use their intercom to make an announcement!
In the end we'd managed to assemble a crowd of about 100. The plan was to wander around the sqaure, and at the sound of a whistle, everyone would point at the cathedral tower and freeze. We would stay like this for a minute or two, until the second whistle, and then walk around again as if nothing had happened.
Well we did it, and the reactions were great. People were looking around with confused expressions, wondering what all these people were freezing and pointing at. One thing i would try to do better next time, would be recruiting well beforehand for a better turnout. The more people, the more effective it will be!
Lessons & tips:
Make a plan!
Have a specific idea of what you want to do, where, and what time. You can't be too prepared.
Advertise!
It would help to start advertising at 2-3 weeks beforehand so people have time to clear their schedules, but not enough time to forget about it. Make sure you get the word out to as many people as possible, as a lot of people, however well-intentioned, won't be able to make it on the day.
Find a leader.
If you're dealing with a large crowd, you're going to need a person or people to take charge and organize everyone. Make sure everyone knows exactly what's happening.
Happy flash mobbing!
