"It was like walking in the dark and then finally finding the lightswitch.""
How I did it: I realized pretty quickly at the beginning of my first quarter at OSU that I was not cut out to be an architecture major. After a few tears (from stress and anxiety of what I was going to do), I took a deep breathe and decided I was going to be okay. I asked myself what things I like about my current job now and what kinds of things I enjoying learning about. And I realized that I didn't really want to sit behind a desk all day and I wanted to interact with people and have something new to do everyday. I enjoy watching medical shows and I've always wanted to learn more about the human body and how it works. So I researched medical jobs. I knew I didn't want to be a doctor (I could handle the job, but didn't want to be in school for forever!). I could be a nurse, but we've already got one of those and one in training in my family. After a lot of searching I found physical therapy and it just seemed to suit me. I would get to work with people in a good atmosphere, I wouldn't have to work behind a desk all day, and each day would be a unique experience.
Lessons & tips: Research, list things that you love (even as silly as watching your favorite tv show), and know how long certain programs can take. And don't be afraid to change your major. Just find something that you love to do.
Resources: There are a lot of good websites out there that will tell you what kinds of fields you should be looking at. But really just follow your heart.
