How to learn a new word each week and use it

"I've been doing this for the last ten years or so. Now that I'm a teacher, I put the words on the board for my students to learn also."
How I did it: The best thing to do, in my experience is to think of two or three sentences where a new word is appropriate and then just try to find ways to incorporate the word into conversations during the day and the subsequent week.
Resources: I buy "Word a Day" calendars and also look for the word of the day at Thesaurus.com or Dictionary.com.
