How to publish a short story

How I did it: My university's newspaper had a flash fiction contest last semester, which I entered and won second place. The professor in charge of the contest also helped put together our school's literary magazine, and he asked me if he could include it.
Obviously, I said yes. It was supposed to be out last week, but there was some kind of delay. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a copy Monday! :)
Lessons & tips: Write down interesting experiences. You might find that they're the perfect length for a flash fiction piece, and once it's polished and more detail is added, it's not a bad piece.
