How I did it: I am not rich, but I have gotten into the habit of saving some money once a month in addition to the money that is automatically withdrawn.  I love going to the bank to make those deposits- it's actually the same high as a get from shopping.

Lessons & tips: Even if it is just an unexpected $20 refund, put it in the bank.  It adds up and it keeps you from spending it on stupid things.
