I get these little mini-moleskin type notebooks from the student store for about $2 from my community college; they’re really perfect for to-do lists and jotting ideas down since they have a sewn in bookmark and an elastic band to keep them shut against the weather / vandals / whatever.
How to buy moleskine
How I did it: I had been thinking of buying a Moleskine for some time, and was even more intrigued when I found out about the Moleskine City notebooks. At Powell's, I found "used" (still shrink-wrapped but slightly banged up) Moleskine City notebooks for both Seattle and D.C. We visit DC a lot, and we're going on a cruise out of Seattle soon, so I bought both for less than the cost of a "new" one.
I decided to use the Seattle notebook as a journal for the cruise itself. I've already noted some of our travel details, itineraries, contact info, etc. in it, and I plan to update it during the trip.
