"Red Rock Splendor, the San Juan has so much to offer the kayaker, rower, and canoeist. So load up family and friends and travel to Bluff, Utah."
How I did it: Applied for a permit in January, for a Fall time that I could go. Told all my friends they were invited they just needed to get 7 days off of work. Have at least one other friend really involved so the trip happens with support. Have many phone conversations with people to see who was coming and so you stay involved. Call the Monticello river office and pay for the permits, call the Navaho Reservation and pay for hiking permits. Reserve the oar rigs, and other river equipment at the Outdoor Recreation Department. Make sure you have a large vehicle for transport gear. Have lots -0- cash for food for 7 days for people, then double that and add alcohol. Drive 5 hours south to Bluff, Utah. Get up early set up the shuttle so a car is waiting at the take out. Try to put on the river earlier than 7:45 pm (like our mistake), find a campsite in the dark and sleep under the stars. Congrats you are on the San Juan camping by Tiger Wall, and on your way to bliss...
Lessons & tips: have a beer for the ranger at put in. have a cintronella candle for Steer Gulch Camp around mile 77, cigars can help with misquitos as well, or mega deet. Leave more time to chill in Bluff or stay a night at Mexican Hat before rushing back to work the next day.
Resources: San Juan River map from Flagstaff Press, $17.95 at REI.
Just wish I had a map case for protection but it did great with water proof pages, just don't let your map blow away.
