How to workout with kettlebells
"Practical strength training. I feel the difference in the little things I do every day."
How I did it: I took a weekly class at the YWCA. After a couple weeks I bought a 12kg kettlebell to practice at home in between classes. I've been working it into my routine at least twice a week ever since. Its great for busy people as it takes care of cardio and strength training simultaneously and gets your heart rate way up in a hurry. Oh, and it's fun!
Lessons & tips:
- Be willing to push yourself.
- Take a class to make sure you are doing it right, you could injure yourself.
- Do it more than once a week.
- It is great to do while watching TV. I like to run through a series of 30 second intervals during commercials, switching exercises for each spot.
- In the end, you will notice your own strength in everyday activities. I like that it is not about building muscle as much as it is about being stronger in really practical ways.
Resources: If you are looking to purchase a kettlebell of your own, I would go to Lifeline Fitness. I have shopped around and they have the best value. Also their kettlebells have a great textured finish which won't slip out of your hands.
I like Andrea Ducane's kettlebell goddess video for building my own home routine. There is no music, which is kind of nice because I can put on my own music in the background.
