How I did it: Did this in college and it was such a success I did it again. Guests are asked to bring a poetry "piece" which should be the lyrics from a pop song. The more stupid the lyrics the better. Each "poet" reads their selection as though it is the most serious piece of poetry ever composed. It's pretty hilarious. I gave iTunes gift cards to the best ones (as voted by other party guests) and played the real songs after the slam part of the party had concluded.

Lessons & tips: Be clear that the songs should be pop and corny. I had someone bring a very offensive rap song with the N word in it over and over again, which made everyone (both white and black guests) very uncomfortable.
