How I did it: A friend's girlfriend hooked me up with one of her friends. We exchanged phone numbers and sent text messages back and forth for about a week before our first "date," which was mini-golf and dinner with some mutual friends.
Lessons & tips: Don't agree to go on a date with someone before you meet them casually first... AWKWARD. Lol.
