How to live in NYC
How I did it: I got into Columbia for graduate school and moved into housing. Then I proceeded to spend all of my money on rent, school, books, and groceries. I went to the parks a lot (I have a dog).
Lessons & tips: For me the bottom line is the city is too expensive. I walk everywhere, make nearly all of my meals at home, go out once every two weeks or so, live in a tiny old apartment with mice, and the weather is harsh, cold wet winters and hot muggy summers, fall and spring seem to only last a week each. The amount I am paying to live like this is just crazy. With all the money I have spent this year on just getting by in NYC, I could have bought a house.
But I will never wonder. I have done it and that counts for something.
Plus the people are great!
