How I did it: It was a family trip to visit my uncle who lives is Chang Mai.  We visited other areas as well but it was definitely best when we had a knowledgable guide.  My uncles married a Thai and has been living there for over 20 years.

Lessons & tips: See some of the caves with the status in them.  They are amazing.  The beaches were okay but I have seen better.  I was most impressed with the mountains.  Also be very respectful of the culture for example cover up in the temples, ladies do not touch the monks, and do not point your toes at people.  The Thai's are so kind.  Be sure to return the favor.
