How to do 20 pushups
"Not perfect form, but all the same I'm pretty happy with going from 1 to 20 consecutive push-ups in just two months."
How I did it: I did push-ups three times a week at the gym along with my regular workout program. Did not do any bench press, so I could focus on push-ups instead.
I followed the Hundred Push-ups program, and when I started I could only do one on my toes. So I did push-ups on my knees for two weeks until I was able to do almost 30 of them, and 8 real ones. Then I started the same program all over again, but with real push-ups. Had to do week two one more time, but at my final exhaustion test I accomplished my goal. Now I'm up to 30.
Lessons & tips:
- Don't do push-ups every day. It's counter-effective. Your muscles need rest to get stronger.
- Warm up! Preferably include some dynamic strething for your shoulders, like shoulder dislocations and scap push-ups.
- Don't expect to be able to do more push-ups every single workout. There are days when you're just not in shape. If you reach a plateau, just hang in there and do what you can. You'll soon be on your way up again.
- Make push-ups your first priority, and don't try to accomplish too many goals at the same time. Do push-ups first thing, after your warm-up.
