How I did it: I used the Do-It website to find out about volunteering opportunities in my local area. I was looking for things that could double as work experience for medicine. Through them I wrote an application for an MS care home and they sent it to the centre for me, and kept me updated.

I also volunteer at a hospital - I did this by getting directly in touch with the voluntary services co-ordinator.

Lessons & tips: If you're based in the UK, use the Do-It website to find general volunteering opportunities. If you're looking for something specific, such as work in a hospital or animal shelter, contact them directly.
