How to learn ancient greek
How I did it: Partly self-taught, partly through classes at university. And then above all by keeping to a reading schedule after I graduated, for my own pleasure.
Lessons & tips: - The dialects don't actually differ that much, except that Homer has a fairly different vocabulary (but he's worth it!). Well, the Aeolic dialect is actually quite different but there's nothing to read in it anyway. But Attic, Ionic, and Koine are very similar.
- Aorist roots are a nasty part of the memorisation process, but unlessy ou learn them well you'll have a lot of trouble looking words up in the dictionary, so drill them extra hard.
Resources: Perseus project. Google books. Between the two of these you can find any ancient text, and the former will also help you parse words when starting out. Once you have the basic grammar down, set a fixed reading schedule (e.g. "50 lines of Homer a day") and keep at it.
