How I did it: Read reviews, compared top 3 of my choice in forums/articles, looked at photos from flickr taken from that specific camera, then decided to buy, paying attention to the most important features TO ME.
Lessons & tips: If you read reviews and comparisons, you'll find yourself going in circles until you narrow down the most important things you are personally looking for in a camera (size/portability, low-light performance, fully manual capabilities, etc.).
