How to watch the sunrise from above the clouds.
How I did it: Mt. Haleakala in Maui, Hawaii. I wasn't prepared for the 44 degree weather at the time, but I had my family's body heat to help with that. I at least took my camera with me. The clouds hovering over the crater through the mountain tops looked like ocean spray.
Lessons & tips: It's about a 30 min. drive from the bottom to the top of the mountain,
going in zig -zags. If you're prone to motion sickness, I say take
something to help you endure it because it's worth it! Make sure you have lots of room in your memory card and your battery is charged for your camera. Take lots of pics while you're there, and maybe even a video camera...the sun rises fast! The time it rises depends on the year but you can google this and it'll give you a schedule of times. I went the second to last weekend in May and it rose at 5:42am. I'd get there early though to grab a good spot--some people watch the sunset the night before and spend the night in their car. Parking and standing spots go fast.
Prepare for the weather (it was in the 40s but on the site it says it can go below freezing depending on the time of year) even if you're in Hawaii...and bring sunglasses!
