How to be active, so that I can describe myself as "basically in shape," while accepting that I will never be an athlete
How I did it: I just kept getting on the treadmill and kept realizing I could achieve more and more. I also tried to keep active during periods I wasn't on the treadmill by hiking, gardening, and using Wii Fit. Eventually my fitness level increased and I realized that "accepting I will never be an athlete" is over and I need to change my mindset and believe I'm an athlete. (That's a hard thing to write! Even now my mind is screaming, "Who are you kidding?") I just needed to realize that my vision of an athlete is too narrow, and someone who's regularly acting athletic *is* an athlete.
Lessons & tips: No great insight! Don't give up, draw on the support and encouragement of others, and start again if you slack off for a while. Keep a log of your progress, because it really, really helps to look back and see how far you've come and what you've accomplished!
