How to set routine in place that make departures, esp. the day before travel, smooth and orderly, replacing the current pattern of Frenetic,Too-Much-To-Do Countdown.
How I did it: After years of getting whacked and overwhelmed with pre-departure details, I finally, had some deep level, profoundly, truly, HAD ENOUGH. I had a recent trip that was a working vacation --- more vacation than work. I was greatly looking forward to it and I thought: "this time, really no-kidding, I'm doing this differently. I am going to leave in a relaxed way." And I began the detailed minutiae of packing two weeks in advance. (This also involved mailing some things to one of my multiple destinations).
I didn't miss a beat. I didn't forget anything. I got enough sleep beforehand. I even got to go to dance class the night before and work in my garden the day of!
Lessons & tips: Sometimes you have to get "sick and tired of being sick and tired." I understood the importance of lists for travel long before using them consistently; I finally was so fed up I used them. I also did the most anxiety-provoking stuff ("Find passport") first.
I also took the time to really think through every detail of the trip. I repeat, took the time. I always did this, but in a haphazard way. This time, I gave it deep, thoughtful focused attention, and it did take time.
:eaving relaxed, though, is self-motivating. It feels so much better! I am not going back to the old way.
