How to get a job- ANY job by Lara161

"Unpredictable and frustrating, but i'm glad I got there in the end"

How I did it: I really wanted to work as a waitress and not in a shop so I spent three days walking around handing in job applications to my local restaurants, bars, and Starbucks'. I also applied to towns further afield, and even in the centre of London which takes about an hour by tube to get to. I found it quite useful to search 'Starbucks' or 'Blockbuster' on google maps, and copy out maps of the locations of where I could find some local ones.

I found it a really big challenge to firstly find places that were hiring, then places that were hiring for full-time.

From talking to the people in the stores I picked up really useful advice, some of the people I talked to were really helpful and I am really grateful. They suggested to apply to the busier places which whill attract lots of tourists over summer, and to not take the lack of responses personally because the bad economic climate means that companies generally don't need to hire because they don't have any customers.

I applied to lots of different places, and I eventually got one phonecall back from a bar on Bond street. It had a day of training today and start properly next week! It felt like it would never happen but it actually has, which feels quite strange!

Lessons & tips: Don't be daunted or disheartened by the lack of jobs or amount of competition. There is a job out there for you, you just have to keep looking and you will get there!!

Resources: The internet for printing out application forms and finding store locations, talking to the lovely people in stores. Also my feet for carrying me around all everywhere without a break!
