How I did it: My boyfriend is from Sydney, and we went back there and lived for a few months. The plane ticket is pretty expensive  - 1500 or so. And depending on what visa you're getting, that can be a little tricky too. 

Lessons & tips: buy the weekly bus/train/ferry passes. you'll save tons of money on public transport.
