How to go to japan
How I did it: My friend asked me if I wanted to join her on a trip to Japan to see a friend of ours in Tokyo. I said yes. That was pretty much it. :)
Okay, there was more to it. Saving money, planning the itinerary (and keeping an open mind about it), asking around for experiences from other people, etc.
Lessons & tips: We also got the Japan Rail Pass - 385 euros for two weeks (so more expensive than the other price quoted here!) and totally worth it: easy, convenient and also way cheaper than buying your tickets there.
As for prices: Japan is notorious as an expensive country which is what kept me from going there before. The image is not entirely fair. Prices are around the same level as in Amsterdam. Sleeping in private (twin) rooms can be done for 20 to 40 euros per person, of course it is cheaper if you don't mind dorm rooms. Check the cheaper ryokans, traditional Japanese guest houses. They are wonderful: hospitable, charming and affordable. Food is also not that expensive. It is possible to have a noodle dinner, with all kinds of fish or meat or whatever, for around 8 euros. Only thing: fruit is amazingly expensive!
Another tip: don't be afraid of the language challenge. Although most Japanese do not speak or understand English, you get there eventually if you persevere. Look at it as a game you can both enjoy. :)
Resources: Wikipedia, Lonely Planet - I found the LP more useful than the Rough Guide but that's personal preference.

Yay! For tangerine, the pioneer
I am immediately going to look into the ryokans, and buying rail passes from here, and see if we can get one for son even if he lives there.
Fortunately, he can speak and read and write Japanese,so we shall have his guidance. But I am sure that we shall embarrass him as brash Westerners who do not understand the exquisite protocol.
I have started looking for little gifts from here to take, following on your advice.

tangerine_now coooold out there!
Oooh great!
Do try to strike out on your own and speakie japanesie people! It’s fun. :D
Anyway, that exquisite protocol is waived largely for foreigners, unless of course you will make a really really bad mistake but I’m sure that is not likely to happen. Just be polite, modest and look carefully what others (Japanese) do. That’s what we did and although I am sure we made some faux pas, I don’t think we made idjits of ourselves. :-)
The railpass for your son may not be possible because they are really only for people on a visitor visa. So that depends for him – probably not. It would be great if it were possible though, you could make maybe trips further afield. The shinkansen (bullet train) is amazing: comfortable, fast (of course) and astonishingly punctual. But that goes for all Japanese public transport. :)
