"beautiful and exhausting"
How I did it: I started from a history of road and park running - mainly around London. When I was much younger I used to do quite a lot of hill walking but in retrospect I should have a lot more mountain training - fell running etc etc. We set off really well but after four hours my calves were twanging like a banjo and the idea of running the descents was not even an option.
The sense of freedom from running without paths or road on the top of a mountain is not to be underestimated.
Other highlights - drinking water from mountain stream, getting stuck in the mud, being attacked my grouse (I came to close to a grouse chick), see wild deer, being woken at 5am by a piper.
Come on next year!
Lessons & tips: Pack light.
Do some hill training.
Drink plenty of water.
Pace yourself.
