Swearing
I was accused of swearing at someone last week on the phone
although there were no witnesses-I know I didn’t swear but it was nice to know that
so many people said they had never heard me swear.
How I did it: I started to put a quarter into a jar every time I caught myself, and I already had disciplined myself not to swear around kids (I teach high school), so it came down to times when I was hanging out with friends. The less you use swear words, the more you notice when they are used - and the more uncomfortable I got listening to some of my friends! Be careful, because if you're like me, I lose track and start talking like my friends do and so if I hung out with people who swore, I swore, and then had to catch myself later.
All the money I put aside I ended up spending later (for mother's day), but everytime I looked at the stupid jar I got really annoyed because it was sizable and I wasn't allowed to spend it until it'd been a month between deposits!
I will allow myself "hell no", "heck yea", stuff like that. I find myself jarred if I hear other epithets.
It just takes practice and really being aware and listening to yourself and what you're saying.
Lessons & tips: ~Listen to how your friends talk, like record a regular convo and then re-listen to it later, especially around a kid. (you'll be waay embarrased if you're babysitting your 5yr old niece and you try listening to a convo with loads of f-bombs and the like!!!) If they swear all the time, then you likely do too - and that has probably hugely limited your life in ways you don't even KNOW!
~Set goals and consequences for behavior you want to reduce/eliminate
~Make sure to wean yourself, especially if it's virulent in your speech. Don't try too much/cold turkey because then you are apt to give up far too easily.
