How to get my thyroid checked
How I did it: I haven't gotten the results back yet. I told my GP I wanted a thyroid panel. I typed up a comprehensive list of my symptoms, but ultimately left it at home and stuck with the basics-- depression, anxiety, weight gain, thinned hair, low basal body temperature. He said that my reflexes were a little sluggish, and that it would actually be good if my thyroid was a little low, because it's easy to treat. He gave me a recommendation for an endo, and said that he would call me Friday if my tests were abnormal. No phone call, but I also made him promise to send me the results, because I want to compare them myself to the most recent standards.
I have been reading up on this, and I already have an idea of what tests to try next if these aren't conclusive. Thank goodness, this time the test was covered by insurance-- he actually sent me down the hall right away to have my blood taken, which I was not expecting.
Lessons & tips: Be sure to get a copy of your test results. Not ever lab uses the most up-to-date standards. Check for yourself!
Take your basal body temperature each morning to see if your metabolism is slow.
