How I did it: I wrote songs and recorded them in my apartment using a Korg D1200 recording workstation. I got pretty good sounds as well from a crappy casio keyboard picked up off Craigslist for $20.
Resources: CDBaby is generally the best company to go through. They actually have musicians' interest at heart.
