I was single and didn’t spend any times in bars or the typical places to meet someone so I experimented with internet dating. Along the way I saw the picture of an attractive woman who I thought lived a long distance away – too far to meet.

In the picture that I first saw of her, she just looked like a nice person – totally at peace with herself. So much so that I wrote a quick note telling her so – without any expectation of hearing from her.

She sent a “Thank you” note back and we started a dialogue. I thought it would be a “just friends” kind of thing since I believed she lived hundreds of miles away. We ended up writing daily and we did that for months. In the process we learned more about each other, and our shared, beliefs, values and goals than I had ever known about anyone else I had ever dated. We had a lot in common – not so much in shared interests but in our values and priorities. At some point distance came up and it turned out that we only lived about an hour apart. We decided to meet but with the caveat that no matter what happened when we met, we would still be friends. We talked on the phone for the first time after writing for months.

We went on a picnic and it turned out to be the best thing we had ever done. We already knew more about each other than couples who had dated for a long time because all of our writing had been about learning about each other and our lives! We started dating on a regular basis and to make a long story short – we’re married today.

If you had told me before those events that I ever would even have dated someone I met on the internet, let alone married that person I would have thought you were crazy. But the truth is that it was the best way I have ever met anyone I had a relationship with. People always think about the “mystery and excitement” associated with dating someone new but the truth is you often meet and start a relationship before you even know much about each other. You jump into the relationship based on all the wrong reasons and then a few months later (if you’re lucky) you break up because you didn’t really know much about each other.

The way we did it was just the opposite. By the time we went out, we knew each other better than most people who have dated for a long time. We had already become great friends, it just remained to be seen whether we would find the remainder of the attraction necessary to have a serious relationship. In our case we did – and the risk of making a mistake after that was almost negligible!

I would highly recommend doing what we did. Now I’m married to my best friend and a woman I love through and through.

I agree about making all of the connections via email and phone call vs starting to date someone simply because you are both single, both looking, and you like their appearance. What happened with me is that he and I established a connection that was real and intense through our getting to know one another. We even weathered some storms together before we “met in person.” (Granted, we did know each other before as acquaintances, enough to say hello.) But because of his art and my art, we were able to say, “Hey, I’d like to get to know you better.” Distance kept us apart, but the internet gave us this amazing connection that could be check several times a day as we said, “Here is what I love. Here is who I am, totally authentically. Here are my warts, scars, and slimy parts. Here is what I want in life. Here are my hopes and dreams.” Total revelation is easier if the daily hiccups and issues of physical togetherness are removed. I can’t imagine covering the intellectual and discovering ground we covered by sitting over dinner for a couple of hours each week. We established a foundation way before we were tempted to sleep together, way before we had to deal with the stresses in our daily lives together. We feel worlds ahead simply because the internet closed the distance without… well.. closing the distance.

HOw do you know if you love someone? i mean i just get so confused with all my feelings?! im seventeen and i feel like ii techniqually love like 3 boys because i am always like thinking like oh yes i finnlay like someone else and not one of the three… i dont know what it means to be in love?! is there a point of looking for love when your my age or is it just a waste of time?
