How to plan a wedding
How I did it: With the help of mostly my mother, step-mother-in-law, and sister-in-law! I could never have done it without them! They helped me to plan a wedding in TX while I lived in KY. I met with most of my vendors (venue, catering, cake, dresses, flowers, DJ, photography) before leaving TX, however.
We did some things ourselves like the centerpieces, draping, invitations, and programs.
We also had an invaluable resource--our photographers, who were our relatives, had excellent recommendations for other vendors.
Lessons & tips: Plan early. The earlier you can make decisions the better. The location(s) are the very first thing you need to decide on, and the good places go quick!!!
Get everything you can get done as early as you can do it. It will allow you to enjoy the moments of your shower/stag/rehearsal/ceremony/reception without worry.
Something will go wrong. Just accept that, breathe, and move on. You will be a happier bride/wedding planner!
Resources: theknot.com (SO helpful!). Sams.com for centerpiece flowers. Also, ask your current vendors who they'd recommend for other things. The wedding business is a small community--everyone knows each other and knows who are the best people at their jobs.
