How to keep my house clean
How I did it: I essentially began from a pig sty, so it didn't happen overnight.
I basically started one big project every weekend. First was the closet. If your closet is crammed with clutter and old crap you haven't used in years, you won't be able to keep the rest of the house clean.
Then I went through the pile on and around my desk. Spent an entire day filing and shredding papers. Another day under the bathroom sink and cleaning the shower. Then cleaning and defrosting the refrigerator another day. I think you get the idea that at first, it takes a lot of work to clean and sort things out.
In the meantime, on a daily basis, washing my dishes as soon as I was done with them, making my bed every morning, and hanging my clothes up as soon as I took them off. Each of these things requires 3 mintues tops.
Keeping my house clean and organized requires daily upkeep, and a weekly cleaning. You don't take a shower and expect to stay clean for the whole month. Your house is the same.
All in all, anyone can drop in anytime, but most importantly IT SAVES TIME and REDUCES STRESS. You have a clean dish when you want it. You know where those cute pair of jeans are, and they aren't all wrinkled in a wad on the floor. You know where your remote control is, your keys are, your scissors...
Lessons & tips: One way I found to reduce the amount of papers I needed to file or shred was to sign up for online statements, and discontinue paper ones. If I really need a statement, I can print it, otherwise, I don't need the extra paperwork to keep track of. I also opted-out of junk mail like credit cards which cut out a lot of the rest. I included that link below.
Once I got it into my mind that in the end I would be saving time and be less stressed out over one of the very few things in life that was completely within my control, it became much more difficult to continue on living like a slob.
