"how to tell you've accomplished the goal..."
How I did it: In all actuality, this is never-ending process. For the past few years we've made every effort to not live extravagantly; partly because we've had no other choice, partly because we aren't extravagant people, and partly because we simply don't ever want to live high on the hog. We've made "sacrifices" (and I use quotations because sacrifice really means that we gave up something we want/need, but really we got rid of things that were really useless in our lives) in order to live the kind of life we want to live. There are still many more things we'd like to do, for sure, but all good things in all good time. The point is that we are moving in the right and same direction. As I've said before, I don't want to live like a pilgrim, but I don't want to be buried in junk, paying for things that are wasteful, and always wanting MORE!!! To me, living simply simply means that we focus on our needs rather than our wants and use our creativity to find our fun. We do spend money on things that aren't really "necessary", but on things that create memories, not garbage.
That is all.
Lessons & tips: Just ask yourself if you really need whatever it is you are thinking about in your life, whether animate or inanimate. What will it add? What will it take away?
