How I did it: Started it right after I got my Master's degree, and it took me four years to finish it. Just presented my doctoral work last tuesday (june 16th), and the examiners really liked it. A lot of work, but it paid off in the end.
Now I'm a Ph.D. in physics! :)
(yea, yea, kinda like the big bang theory :P)
