How to go to a farmers market
How I did it: I noticed for the last month or so that someone had a tent set up in a vacant lot on my way to work. There were signs near it that said "Fresh local tomatoes and peaches" I never had time to stop on my way to work, so this morning I drove over there.
The man running the stand was really friendly and helpful. He also had a lot more fruits and veggies than just tomatoes and peaches. All the produce looked really fresh and colorful. He said he grew some of it and that other local farmers grew some of it.
For only 13 dollars I got tomatoes, onions, red potatoes, yellow squash, green beans, strawberries, and blackberries.
I am definitely going back and I told the man there I would see him again and that the fruits and veggies were beautiful.
It made me really happy that I was helping local farmers and helping the environment by not buying produce that was shipped from far away.
Lessons & tips: Start looking for produce stands while you are out doing other things.
I pass this one on my way to work all the time. There are a few bigger farmers markets in my city, but they are on the other side of the city from where I live and I'm not in those areas often.
Keep going back (I plan to). You will get fresh, local produce and help smaller farmers who don't grow enough to sell their crops commercially.
Resources: I am fortunate enough to live in a medium sized city surrounded by lots of rural areas, so roadside stands are everywhere.
I looked on the internet when I first created this goal to find a bigger farmer's market in my area before this stand showed up. It had the names of some of the big farmer's markets.
