How to become Financially Independent
How I did it: The thing is, if there is an aggressive judge that wants to go after your funds in order to cancel some debt that likely doesn't exist, you're screwed, as I was. Sometimes the law on the books is treated as optional, correctable, or otherwise laughable. Civil rights are regularly spit on and the law works against you quite frequently. Thus, after my hit, I decided to move my funds outside of the US. Guatemala is the best. Since then, I've been able to be financially independent.
Lessons & tips: Today there really are no jurisdictions left for this (Switzerland, Hong Kong, Andorra, etc. are all selling out with tax information treaties). The only real answer is to have an overseas lawfirm sign on a bank account for you, protecting you by attorney client priviledge.
Resources: Disclaimer: I work with Panama Legal (not based out of Guatemala). http://www.panamalaw.org. However, we are not the only ones who help people do this. There are many others, but you should always be very careful and know who you're dealing with.
