How I did it: I went with a student ambassador program. Most the people in my group were quite immature, so I stuck with the couple of kids that were at my maturity level (I was the oldest of the group at the time). I definitely prefer traveling with a couple friends or by myself. Easier to not stand out as a tourist that way!
Lessons & tips: Even if you have to postpone the trip for another year to save try to spend at least a full week touring the city. I only spent two days and I saw hardly anything!
For international traveler's, try to go when your currency is as close to matching the pound as possible. Things are expensive in London as is without a cruddy exchange rate! I know this is hard to plan, considering how fast exchange rates can change, but it is something to consider.
