How to replace the windows on our house
"Replacing windows saved me money in the long run, improved the appearance of the house, and keeps me from painting."
How I did it: We did this in stages. The upstairs first, then downstairs, and finally the basement. Each was done 9 to 12 months apart so we could afford it without going into debt. So it took about two years to complete the job. We researched several companies, and found one that gave use a good balance of quality and cost. I'm sure there are lots of good companies out there (as well as some rip-offs), but we were very pleased with the quality of the work as well as the product.
Lessons & tips:
- Visit several showrooms.
- Ask around, get opinions from friends
- Our electric bill went down 25% the first year.
Resources: Champion windows did ours. I'm not sure if they are just local to St. Louis, though. We read Consumer Reports to find out what to look for, and what to avoid.
