How I did it: About 2 hours after Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band played in concert at the Wilma in Missoula, MT June 22, 2009; I met Conor at a bar.
I do not know which bar because I don't live in Missoula, just came up there for the show.
I walked past him when I went in, and immediately knew it was going to happen, just wasn't sure how/what I would say.
So we got a couple rounds of drinks, stood near him cause he was busy talking to some girl, and then I approached him and just said "Hi Conor, I really enjoyed the show" and went from there....he asked me my name and let us get a photo!
I told him he has been my favorite artist since I was 11 years old and he asked me how old I am now, I said 19 (multiple drinks in hand, hah!) and he seemed kind of shocked or something, even though I certainly look my age or younger.  Basically I just talked to him for about 3 minutes about his music and we were both all smiles :)
Then, when we were leaving, I approached him again to tell him the bar we were headed to and invited him to come down later.  He sounded like he'd be interested in going (never saw him there), and then he poked me in the side of my torso and said "It was good to meet you!"

Lessons & tips: DON'T BE SCARED.
I was with a friend who has a yellow bird tattoo and she was scared she would seem cheesy, but really, telling an artist you like their music is nothing but flattering, it won't upset them.
