How to make my own business cards
How I did it: I used vistaprint for mine, I don't want to approve one business card service over another, but I'm sure there are many good ones out there, Google is your best bet, although for me (in the UK) I went with Vista Print.
Anyway, I designed my business card in Photoshop, being sure to use the template .psd file provided by the printing company.
I'm not a very artistic person, so scoured the net for ideas, I eventually came across a very plain, but bold and professional looking design, which incidentally was on a Photoshop tutorial site.
I didn't steal the design, but I was inspired by it, the design I found was red, so I tried to emulate the design, but in blue and obviously using my business logo and contact details.
Lessons & tips:
- Keep your design bold and simple
- Try to cut down on fancy gradients
- Use clear, common fonts such as Arial, Verdana and Times New Roman
- Get your cards printed on the highest quality card you can afford
- Glossy finishes are apparently better suited to graphical cards
- Matt cards are more suited to business cards with lots of text
- Order enough to give them to your friends, family, co-workers, neighbours and colleagues
- Decide if you want a plain back, having your logo on the back with a web address or thank you message might add a nice, professional touch
- When designing your card Stay in the safe area! It's possible the edges of your design will be lost when cutting the cards to size, so leave a fair margin around the card free from any important text
