How I did it: I got an apartment that's about 2 blocks away from work, which happens to be in a neighborhood that's very walkable: lots of shops within walking distance, etc., etc. Unfortunately, rampant zoning laws make it difficult for these types of neighborhoods to exist. I was pretty lucky.
