How I did it: I took a part time job and cut back on cigarettes and booze, yes it was that simple...
It took me about 6 months to get the money, it's impressive how much money you can save by buying cheap beer and cigarettes
Lessons & tips: i bought the laptop before the netbook craze. right now i would rather buy a normal computer and a netbook. IMO a 700 euro computer and a 300 euro netbook will be much more flexible than a 1000 euro laptop.
