How to start a podcast
How I did it: The steps I took were roughly as follows:
1 - create the main audio and saving it as an MP3 file.
2 - create the 'contact me' bit for the end of each podcast as a separate MP3 file.
3 - in Garage Band (on Mac OSX) created a simple musical loop to break up the sections.
4 - placed the music and speech on the timeline and set the music's volume to fade in and out (it went music - welcome title - music - main text - music - contact me)
5 - saved the file in Garage Band format so I can use it in future
6 - exported file to iTunes as an MP3 and then uploaded that MP3 file to my website
7 - created a new post and used the instructions that came with the Podcasting plugin to set up the podcast and was able to easily make it accessible to iTunes.
Ummm - I realise that sounds more complex than it might have done, but believe me, the hardest bit was speaking to the microphone. The rest didn't take long at all!
Please have a look at my podcast and see how I did it - there may be (well, almost certainly is!) a better way to do it, but this works fine. Get in touch if you want to know more!

Lessons & tips: I'd say - use the free tools that are out there - using Wordpress and Podcasting meant I had to do no editing of complex XML files. Getting your own free Wordpress site means that it won't cost you a penny either!
