How to learn how to swim
How I did it: I had taken private lessons previously, but was still not able to swim well. So I took the plunge (no pun intended) into lessons again because I was going on vacation to Hawaii. I went to a group class with a great instructor offered through our city's public pool. It was nice to see that so many other adults were struggling with the same issue.
Lessons & tips: The most important thing the instructor taught me was the process of bobbing. If you fill your lungs with air and stay relaxed, your body will bring you back to the surface after you have submerged. When your natural buoyancy brings you close to the surface, push yourself up gently until your head is above water and take a breath. You can cross the entire length of a pool this way. It's amazing. The other incredible thing my instructor taught me was SNORKELING! Breathing underwater and fins that make you move like a dolphin is incredible. I highly recommend it, even in a pool. It totally took the fear out of swimming for me. I am happy to say I swam and snorkeled in the ocean in Hawaii. It was awesome. I would have missed out on one of Hawaii's greatest gifts if I had stayed out of the water. YOU CAN DO IT!
Resources: Jesus, snorkel, fins and an awesome swimming instructor.
